Things to do in Taormina

Taormina gets pretty crowded with tourists in July and August. Plan your visit in spring or early autumn. As the climate is temperate, you might actually be able to swim in the ocean in October.

On thing to do in Taormina includes a visit to the ancient theatre

One thing you have to see in Taormina is definitely the ancient theatre. Its spectacular location pitched high up on the mountain provides for gorgeous views. If there in the summer months, try to get a ticket for one of the performances. You will have an unforgettable experience. Book online before arrival.

Castelmola located high above Taormina

Castelmola, the historical centre, is pitched even higher up the mountain. You can reach it by car but be prepared to have difficulties finding a parking spot. A better option is to take the hop-on-hop-off bus departing from Taormina or a taxi.

Apart from reaching Castelmola, the bus will drive you around the small centre of Taormina. It will stop at the Piazza S. Antonio, the glorious public gardens – Parco Duchi de Cesaro. Followed by the Byzantine Tombs and many more places. A 24 hour ticket will cost some 20 Euros.

Corso Umberto

Another recommendable very chilled thing to do in Taormina is a stroll through the main street. It is called Corso Umberto. There is some great window shopping.

Restaurants and local deserts

Savouring the typical Sicilian deserts such as the cannoli filled with ricotta cream and the sfogliatelle are a must. If you are into ice cream, try the black ice cream at Bar Capriccio.

On and around Corso Umberto, you will find plenty of restaurants to choose from.

Golf

If you are into golf, the Taormina Golf Club or the Il Piccolo Golf Club will satisfy your expectations.

Funicular

Other fun thing to do in Taormina is to take the funicular down to Giardino Naxos or “Isola Bella” which are among the most popular beaches of the area.

Etna volcano near Taormina should be on your list

It is possible to drive up the Etna with a private car, however only up to a certain point. From there, you will have to hike some three hours to get near to the peak.

Or take the cable car

Otherwise, take the cable car up and join a guided tour with 4-wheel vehicles. I would go for the latter, as the volcano does erupt occasionally. The guides of the various tours are constantly updated with latest information.

Nero d’Avola wine

I really enjoyed tasting the Nero d’Avola wine growing on the slopes of the Etna Volcano. You need to venture a bit further away towards the eastern slopes of the Etna. I visited the Gambino wineries and really enjoyed their excellent red and white wine.

Acireale

Or head out to Acireale. The huge boulders scattered in the sea are traditionally linked to the legend of the Cyclops. They were the giants inhabiting the Ionian coast. There are several sea front bars and restaurants and you can enjoy a fantastic sunset.

The Norman Castle of Aci Castello can be admired from the road. You will also get a good view from within the ancient village.

Excursions from Taormina

Roads are very good in the area, so Catania, Syracuse, or the world famous baroque triangle around Noto are all easily reachable.

Circle the Volcano Etna near Taormina

An off the beaten tourist track is a drive around the volcano Etna passing by Bronte, the centre for the famous green pistachios. You will be passing by little towns such as Randazzo. Houses here are built with volcanic rock hence rather dark and somber in colour.

Just rent a car

My final recommendation is, just rent a car and adventure out to explore Sicily. Every little village, town has churches to visit, temples, ancient theatres, markets, you name it. And, do not to forget the great food!
