Christmas Markets in Vienna

Sometime mid/end of November each year, Vienna gets ready for the Christmas season. The streets are decorated with festive lights. Little stalls where to have a warming grog or “Gluehwein” pop up everywhere. And, a number of Christmas markets open in various locations in Vienna.

Tuning into Christmas

Christmas atmosphere is everywhere. The baked apples, waffles, cinnamon cookies, gingerbread invite to get tasted. All sorts of savoury food such as sausages are also on sale. So, no danger of going hungry or thirsty. And of course there is the great Christmas decoration and the souvenirs to take home.

Activities at the Rathaus

Apart from the stalls, a number of activities are organised at the market in front of the City Hall. An ice ring invites old and young to have some fun.

A fairy princess reads some Christmas tales albeit in German. But for kids language is not that important as they still love it.

She also tells the story of “Hansl and Gretl” and, in a way, explains the origins of the gingerbread house.

Local Christmas decoration

Christmas decoration is on display in the little stalls. Be it in wood, glass or other material.

The majority of these articles are typical from Austria and handmade.

Christmas Market at Karlsplatz

This one caters a lot for kids. There is a playground put in place for them where they can either cycle or play in bale of straw.

Mullet wine

Of course, it also caters for the grown ups with a number of stalls selling the mullet wine. In some locations, they fill it into these pretty mugs.
