Excursions from Vignales

First of all, the Valley of Vignales and its surrounding are a great place to recuperate from the overcrowded Havana. It is a little elevated thus less hot than Havana. It is also surrounded by lush vegetation. Formerly it was the preferred vacation place for people living in Havana. Later, they all moved to Varadero.

Vignales offers a variety of excursions and tours to do for all tastes, fitness levels and ages.

Pinar del Rio – Tour to Tobacco farms and cigars rolling

There are plenty of tobacco farmers in the area. After all, the best Cuban cigars come from here.

It is really quite intriguing to understand how many different steps are needed to produce a good cigar. In another post I explain all the different steps.

Vignales hiking tours and horseback riding

You can join a number of hiking tours offered either on foot or on the back of a horse.

When opting for horseback riding, I recommend that you go to a reliable horse owner. There are a number of guys on the road offering rides but most of the time their horses are in a miserable state.

Tour to Mural de la Prehistoria

Intriguing art work albeit a bit crazy – for my taste at least.

A number of Caves to visit during excursions from Vignales

Tour to Caverna de Santo Tomas

Here you find the largest underground cave system of Cuba ranging some 45 km.

Only part of the cave is open for visitors. A professional cave guide will take you around.

Vignales excursions to Cueva de los Portales

While still on caves, this one has amazing stalagmites and stalactites in the 30-meter-high cavern. It is worth a visit.

Also, Che Guevara set up headquarters here during the Cuban missile crisis.

Excursions from Vignales to Cueva de los Indios

Quit intriguing walk underground in the caves. It culminates exiting the cave on a boat on the underground river through an opening in the rocks.

Tour Palanque de los Cimarrones

Cave where the run-away slaves would hide from the “rancheadores” hunting them down.

Vignales excursion to Maria la Gorda

You might want to take a trip to the coast. This seaside place offers good scuba diving, giant sea turtles, and plenty of legends of pirates.

Tour Cayo Levisa

You could go scuba diving on this tiny island off the coast with colorful unspoiled coral reefs. A ferry will take you there.

Excursion to Las Terrazas

And finally, Las Terrazas is Cuba’s first sustainable resort community. You will find some natural pools and small waterfalls.
