PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN VIENNA

Public transportation in Vienna is great and easy to overlook. You can choose between subway, tramway or bus.

Or you can rent a bike, rickshaw, electric scooter, horse carriage or segway and do your own thing.

If you opt for public transportation, the OEBB sells a variety of tickets that are valid for one, two or more days. It is worth to get one of those if you think you will be going around with public be it bus, tramway or subway.

VALIDATE YOUR TICKET

You are expected to validate your ticket inside the bus/tram or before descending the escalator leading to the tube platform.

Don’t forget as there are (rare) spot checks by controllers and fines are hefty.

SPECIAL TOURIST TRAMWAYS CIRCLING THE RING I.E. ROAD AROUND THE HISTORIC PART OF TOWN

There is a tourist tramway that circles the Ring Road. You will be seeing a number of the major attractions of Vienna. These rides are not included in you general public transportation ticket for Vienna.

SMALL BUSES

There are small public buses (A1, A2, A3) driving through a limited part of the 1st district and you can use your prepaid public transportation ticket. But, honestly, the better option is to walk around. It only takes a couple of hours. Try getting lost in the old and narrow streets and don’t forget to peak into various patios on the way. You will encounter some surprise shops or restaurants.

HOP-ON-HOP-OFF

Like in all major cities, there are the hop on hop off buses. You will have to buy a separate ticket to ride on those.

Rickshaw in Vienna

RICKSHAWS IN VIENNA

Recently, I have seen a number of rickshaws that will take you around in the pedestrian area. They come in all different colors and designs and you rent them on the spot. So no pre-organization involved. The best place to get one is on the square of the Dom of Vienna, i.e. Stephansdom.

RENT A BIKE OR SCOOTER IN VIENNA

Otherwise, rent a bike or electric scooter which is a popular thing to do in Vienna. There are some 120 stations in town. You will need to register at the first station. The “how to” is well explained on their website and pretty straight forward.

Segway, Vienna

SEGWAY

Another fun way to get around is on a Segway. They actually offer sightseeing tours where you will be going around on your Segway with a guide. All info is one their website.

TRAINS AND SHIPS

In case you intend to travel outside of Vienna, you could use the train or take a ship for a ride on the Danube.

GETTING FROM THE AIRPORT TO TOWN

There are two different trains taking you from the airport to town. One is the city airport train CAT that leaves you in Wien Mitte. It is a bit more expensive but it only takes some 16 minutes to reach town. You can buy the ticket from one of the ticket machines while waiting for your luggage.

The second train has a couple of stops on the way before reaching the Hauptbahnhof i.e. the central train station of Vienna. It costs only 3.90Euros and your ticket will be valid for a ride on other public transportation on that day only. You can buy the ticket either at the OEBB ticket counter or ticket machine in the arrival hall.

Both arrival points have taxi stands close by.
