Things to do in the Turks and Caicos include kiteboarding, e-foil, jet sky and much more
Activities in the Turks and Caicos take place mainly on, in and under water.
Kiteboarding on Long Bay Beach
This is practised mainly (but not only) on Long Bay Beach. There are a couple of very professional kiteboarding schools in the area such as Kite Provo in case you want to learn this amazing sport. You will find no better location to start this adventure. Check out my post on Kiteboarding in TCI.
Kiteboarding during a storm
I have the feeling that once you really get into kiteboarding nothing will stop you going out there when the wind is right. Even with a storm approaching.
E-foil is among the things to do in Turks and Caicos
E-foil – short for Electric Hydrofoil – is somewhat new to Providenciales. There are a couple of companies that offer lessons or, if you are already a pro, rent you the E-foil. One is FLY-TCI. This is the one I tried. I found the instructor very knowledgeable and a very pleasant person with plenty of patients.
According to where the sea water is more flat, they either operate out of Grace Bay or Long Bay Beach. In fact, their motto is “No waves, not wind, no problem.
Jet Sky to Captain Oak’s Tiki Bar
Jet skies are very popular in TCI. And it is always great to have a destination where to go with your jet sky. Apart from checking out the various spectacular beaches, another destination is the floating Captain Oak’s Tiki Bar – a rather new addition to Providenciales destinations.
Captain Oak’s Tiki Bar is off Long Bay Beach and reachable by jet sky. Plenty of drinks, good music and some grilled food. During low tide, people just stand in the waist high water and enjoy their drink.
I believe they pick you up from the hotel and take you back home which is advisable as there are plenty of drinks to be had at this fun place.
Scuba diving
If you are into scuba diving give it a go on the Turks and Caicos. You might actually discover one of the estimated 1000 wrecks still to see the light of the day around the Turks and Caicos Islands. After all, TCI was the hiding place for a number of famous pirates.
There are 33 protected dive areas in the 65 miles of coral reefs. One of the world-wide greatest rift diving can be done here.
Rent a boat
You might want to rent a boat and venture out. While not cheap you will see specular beaches and possibly encounter some dolphins.
Parrot Cay on TCI
One of my preferred places to visit with a boat is Parrot Cay. It is reachable only by boat. Problem is that you will not be allowed to step on land unless you are friends with Bruce Willis, Donna Karan or other celebrities.
Visit the ship wreck off Long Bay Beach in Providenciales
Still on the boat you can visit the ship wreck off Long Bay Beach. Theoretically you can board it but that is not recommendable.
I have seen people on Kayaks or kiteboarders out there but, believe me, it is further out then it seems.
On my visit, I was lucky to see more dolphins. Snorkelling is possible but due to the sandy sea floor I would say there are better places for that on the island.
Things to do in Turks and Caicos also include:
Snorkelling
Smith’s Reef is said to be the best place to spot some marine life. It is located between Bight and Turtle Cove and has three access points each offering interesting sights. I actually did see a sting ray family of five and plenty of colourful fish of all sizes. Its important to get a local to point it to you where the best spot is. Otherwise, you might remain disappointed. Equipment can be easily rented.
SUP
Another great activity on Long Bay Beach is renting a “stand up paddle”. There are a number of places where to rent them.
Deep sea fishing
Tours are offered to go out there and have the catch of day.
Golf course
Providenciales has a 18-hole golf course. If this is your thing, check out the Provo Golf Club.
Horseback riding
This is another activity practised on Long Bay Beach. As the sea water here is shallow, horseback riding takes place mainly in the water. There are a couple of places where to book an outing. No problem if you are a beginner.
Rent a car and discover Providenciales
Drive all the way to amazing Chalk Sound National Park and check out some gorgeous beaches nearby. Or drive to the opposite tip of the island to Blue Haven Marina. Have a look at some spectacular villas and great yachts. You might also see a fantastic sunset. Providenciales is very small. The roads are good. So, in half a day you could see most of the attractive points.
Visit some historical sites
While there are not that many around they are still worth visiting. Some caves are included.
A little shopping in Salt Mills
Salt Mills in Grace Bay offers plenty of shops, restaurants, ice cream parlours.
Chill or just take a walk
But it is not compulsory to do something all the time. The beaches in Providenciales are so amazing that you might actually not want to move a bit but just enjoy and chill. Or simply take a walk.
Conch shells
During a walk on Long Bay Beach you might be lucky to come across a conch shell. Check the latest regulations if you intend to put one of them in your luggage.
Romantic sunset
Turks and Caicos Islands offer some of the best sun sets I have seen.
Moving further away
If you are up to moving a bit further, there are a couple of ferries taking you to neighoring islands of TCI. Problem is that once you arrive on the other side, it is rather difficult to find transportation to explore the area.
Reaching other TCI islands
Intercaribean Airways has frequent flights to get to North and Middle Caicos just 25 minutes away. There are four airports with paved landing strips and three unpaved ones on the uninhabited islands. Caicos Express is another flight charter company that takes you anywhere in the area.
If plans fail due to weather.
Just in case you had everything planned but then, due the weather, all plans fall into water, why not just look at one of the storms approaching. Luckily, they last only a very short time but non the less are quite spectacular.
These are my top activities to undertake on the Turks and Caicos. Do check my other posts for some awesome information on TCI.
