Shopping in Turks and Caicos

Not to long ago, shopping was somewhat difficult in Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos. But this has changed. Everything is available now.

Albeit, the majority of goods are imported from all over the world. Consequently, prices are definitely higher than back home.  So, I suggest that you pack your essentials.

2. Duty free shops in Providenciales

Unless you head out to one of the duty free shops where you might get a pretty good deal on international brands.

3. Buy conch shells only with receipt

Turks and Caicos Islands are one of the few countries where you may purchase up to three conch shells and take them home. Make sure you get a receipt from the shop. This is important as conch shells found on the beach are illegal to export.

4. Bambara rum

Local produce includes the Bambara rum which got its name from the home of African settlers who stranded on the shore of the Turks and Caicos Islands after the slave trader ship Trovadore wrecked in 1841. You can buy it almost everywhere and definitely in the supermarkets.

5. Locally produced chili sauce

Chili sauce in three variations is manufactured on North Caicos and the only place I found it was in the supermarket in Grace Bay.

6. Shopping in Turks and Caicos should include Salt Mills in Grace Bay

If you head to Salt Mills in Grace Bay, you will find locally produced watercolour, oil, acrylic or silk paintings and wood carvings in the various galleries. Plenty of retail shops are in the area.

7. Rare conch pearls of the Turks and Caicos

Great jewellery is crafted from conch shells. The rare conch pearls are set into necklaces and pearls.

Other items available are pretty baskets, hats and bags. I quite liked the colourful zinc animals to hang on the wall found mainly in small shops on the beaches.

8. Good supermarkets in Providenciales

There are a couple of great supermarkets in town. One of them is in the Grace Bay area.

The DIY shops will carry pretty much all you need for whatever you work you intend to do at home.

However, everything from tomatoes to palm trees is imported mainly from Miami. So, as said already, expect prices to be higher than at home.

9. Credit cards accepted everywhere

But at the end of the day, credit cards are accepted pretty much everywhere and there are a couple of banks around.
